Gnomes

Origin Story

Towards the beginning of recorded history, there sat a supermassive planar crystal of unparalleled magnitude deep within the earth of the Prime Material Plane. This crystal, unlike any other, pulsed with latent energy, a connection to the Astral Plane so profound that it transcended mere physical existence. Over several millennia, a consciousness stirred within its crystalline depths, an awareness born from the cosmic energies it absorbed and the endless expanse it observed. This consciousness, nascent and curious, grew, and with its growth came power, a power so immense it obtained divinity. The crystal, now sentient, gave itself a form and a name: Orion.

Orion, in its newfound divinity, traversed the material planes, a luminous figure of awe and wonder. During these travels, Orion discovered others of its kind – planar crystals, each resonating with the unique energies of their respective planes. However, none possessed the consciousness that Orion had attained. Moved by a sense of kinship and a newfound purpose, Orion embarked on a journey across the parallel material planes.

In each plane, Orion breathed life into these dormant planar crystals. With each breath, a new being emerged, the first of the gnomes, each infused with the essence of their native plane. These gnomes were diverse, embodying the very elements and energies of the planes they were connected to. Fire gnomes blazed with passion and intensity, while those of water flowed with adaptability and depth of emotion.

Isolated by their nature, these first-generation gnomes lived near the manifest zones where they were birthed. They were guardians of these zones, solitary figures attuned to the rhythms of their respective elements. However, the spark of curiosity, a trait inherited from Orion, burned within them. As generations passed, this curiosity grew into a longing, a desire to explore beyond their elemental domains.

Thus began the migration of the gnomes into the Prime Material Plane, where for the first time, they encountered each other. These meetings were not of kinship but of conflict. The elemental nature of their personalities clashed violently. Fire opposed water, air battled earth, and what started as hostility soon escalated into war. The world became a battleground for the gnomes, their powers clashing in spectacular and devastating displays.

The war of the gnomes lasted thousands of years, spanning several generations. It reshaped landscapes and altered the course of history. However, as time passed, the intensity of the conflict diminished. The open hostility that once defined the gnome factions gave way to a cold war of racial tensions and discrimination, a lingering echo of their elemental divide.

Despite their tumultuous history, the gnomes' inherent connection to the Inner Planes and elemental magics positioned them as pioneers in these fields. Their innate curiosity and the legacy of their origin drove them to the forefront of elemental magic research and academic advancement. They delved into the mysteries of their own being, unraveling the secrets of the Inner Planes and harnessing their energies in ways never before seen.

The gnomes' exploration of their elemental heritage naturally extended into artifice. Their intrinsic understanding of elemental forces and their innate inventiveness led to groundbreaking advancements in this field. Their creations were not mere objects but embodiments of elemental harmony and power, bridging the gap between the arcane and the elemental.

Thus, the gnomes of Antæra, born from the breath of a divine crystal and shaped by the tumult of elemental war, emerged as a race of profound power and intellect. Their history, marked by conflict and discovery, shaped them into beings of elemental might and unmatched curiosity, forever seeking to unravel the mysteries of the cosmos they were born from.
