The Pantheons

On Divinity

There is a finite number of divine ranks, the number of which is known only to the Overdeities. If new deities are to earn their divinity, they must meet the requirements set forth by them. Divinity is broken down into the ways that one obtains their ranks: Innate, Earned, Stolen, Imparted, and Surrendered. The methods are rather self-explanatory, but are defined as such:

Innate: when a deity is born with their divinity

Earned: divinity that is achieved through achievements or by meeting certain requirements (such as completing a great feat or obtaining a certain number of worshippers)

Stolen: divinity that is taken unwillingly from an existing deity (usually by slaying the holder, or being confiscated by a higher-ranking deity)

Imparted: divinity that is bestowed by a source that already had it

Surrendered: divinity that is temporarily or permanently given up by a deity

The Divine Mandate

During the beginning times, the Overdeities of each sphere in the Known Spheres came together and discussed the implications of allowing their deities to set foot into the Material Planes. It was determined that allowing such an event to occur would bring about too many power shifts among the mortals that the Divine Mandate was forged between them. The Divine Mandate reads as such:

  1. No greater nor intermediate deity may set foot on the Material Plane.
  2. No deity may directly influence mortals. Such ways as sending divine servants or agents into the Material Plane to intervene in mortal affairs or politics. Though other methods may be deemed inappropriate, as necessary.
  3. Deities may reward followers for advancing the goals and cause of their respective deity (thusly decreed during the 2nd Mortal Age).
  4. No deity may procreate with mortals, as their offspring would be deemed too powerful for a single mortal to possess.
  5. No deity may advance past their rank without first being approved by the Overdeity that manages their respective realm.

The Primal Pantheon

The Primal Pantheon is a cross-sphere collection of deities with a presence in all Known Spheres. They represent the primal forces which shape reality: Air, Earth, Fire, Water, and even Magic itself. Most adherents to these faiths are mages, clerics, or druids dedicated to one of its principles. This pantheon was established in the 1st Mortal Era (The Mythical Era) by the collective of Overdeities as a way to manage their reality without needing direct intervention from the Overdeities.

The Primals (Greater Deities) have no recorded origins, nor do they actively collect followers. They represent the primal elemental forces of reality and govern these forces as immutable and emotionless arbiters. They set the laws of reality, and the rest of the world follows. Their worship is done by all through active participation in the world. They have enough ego to maintain reality, but have no plans or machinations outside of maintaining balance.

The Mortal Pantheon

The Mortal Pantheon is made up of the champions, heroes, and patrons of the various mortal races. This pantheon was established second by the Overdeities during the 2nd Mortal Era (The Era of Emergences) because the number of mortals spread across the realms had begun spiking, causing a massive intake of mortal souls. Because of this, the overdeities determined that the mortals must rule themselves, and ascended mortal champions to claim godhood and lead their respective races. Over time, more portfolios began to emerge as various feats of divinity were achieved. The deities in this pantheon are collected from all of the Known Spheres, and are recognized enough throughout them due to the introduction of Spelljamming. The rise and fall of multiple of these deities was also the result of Spelljamming spreading portfolios, as there can only be one deity with any known portfolio.

Courts of Faerie

The courts of Faerie's origins are mostly unknown to most scholars, though most speculate that they originated on the Feywild and migrated into the Material Plane at some point during the 2nd Mortal Era (The Era of Emergences). From there, they spread their influence across the various Known Spheres until they established their courts in all of them, defeating or absorbing the various existing courts from those spheres. This pantheon is worshipped almost entirely by the Fey, though this pantheon is also shared by elves and other mortal descendants of Fey. Druids have also been known to worship this pantheon, though it is unlikely for this pantheon to be outwardly worshipped in any sphere other than one that has been touched by the Feywild, or on the Feywild of that sphere itself.

The deities of this pantheon gain their divinity in a peculiar way; they do not collect worshippers such as other deities do with their clergy, but rather they act as patrons for warlocks in a similar way that other deities do for clerics. Though they have also been known to draw power from smaller, less permanent deals with mortals. They make deals and bestow gifts at a cost, likely servitude or favors. The Fey do not concern themselves with the matters of souls as they are typically immortal, as far as a living creature could be, and involve themselves in plans that take hundreds to thousands of years to unfold. Scholars speculate that the Fey's oracles are able to see into the future and advise their patrons on which deals to take, allowing them to influence the future to better suit their strange and seemingly whimsical machinations.

Due to their unique source of divinity, these deities possess no ability to grant domains. Whether this was intentional or not, they have not revealed.

The Divine Flight

The Divine Flight is a pantheon composed entirely of dragons and is worshipped primarily by dragons and their kin. Though this number is not as high as the non-draconic mortals, the strength of dragons' souls and devotion is so strong that this alone sustains this pantheon. Its adherents include dragons, kobolds, half-dragons, dragonborn, and other dragonblooded beings, with occasional reverence observed among dragon shamans and dragonfire adepts of other races. The progenitors of this pantheon did not arise within the Known Spheres. They came instead from the sphere known as Realmspace, departing over an extended exodus early on in the Mythic Era (1E). Draconic scholars maintained detailed records of this migration, preserving accounts of each flight and the deliberations of the ancient wyrms who guided them. These records describe a rare consensus among the eldest dragons of each lineage, reached in response to the phenomenon known as the Rage of Dragons. Each major flight contributed to the migration, establishing the foundation of draconic presence across the Known Spheres.

The phenomenon known as the Rage of Dragons, or Dracorage, was understood to affect dragonkind at a fundamental level. It manifested as a mounting pressure within the mind, eroding judgment and restraint until even the most disciplined dragons succumbed to violent compulsion. Those afflicted gathered into destructive flights and enacted widespread devastation without regard for prior allegiance or disposition. Following their arrival in the Known Spheres, this condition was no longer observed among dragonkind and was therefore regarded as escaped through the exodus. The dragons who migrated were never made aware of the eventual end of the Dracorage within Realmspace. Having found stability in their new domain, they showed little inclination to investigate its continued status thereafter.

The existence of Dragonborn in Antæra, and thusly other descendants of dragons, is entirely the result of this pantheon. Dragonborn are similar in origin to Warlocks, having made a pact with a powerful dragon and been given the Rite of Rebirth by said dragon. The scales of the resulting Dragonborn match those of the dragon they made their pact with, and their personality slightly adjusts to be more similar to the personality of the respective flight in which they serve.

The Imperial Pantheon

During the 3rd Era (The Era of Man), the influence of the Imperium and Humans throughout the Known Spheres grew exponentially with their rapid population growth. So much so, in fact, that their leaders and folk heroes ascended to divinity through the sheer number of followers and worshippers they have. This is the first known pantheon to have started through multi-sphere worship alone. The divinity bestowed upon these deities was granted by the overdeities of the spheres they were currently inhabiting. Though due to the nature of their worship, they assembled their own pantheon and guide their people through wildspace and the rest of the planes.

This pantheon is worshipped solely by humans, though they are not picky as to which humans worship them. If any non-humans worship this pantheon, they will not receive any power or benefits as a cleric or other divine character.
