World Overview

In Antæra, the story begins not with the birth of empires or the clash of armies but with the slow, majestic retreat of ice—a continent awakening from a slumber that lasted millennia. Picture this: the glaciers, towering and ancient, groan as they shift, revealing a landscape long concealed beneath their unyielding embrace. It's not just the land that emerges from the frost but the very soul of the world. What was once frozen and forgotten stirs with new life, as if the world is drawing a breath after an age of stillness.

In the north, the glacial retreat reveals lush, verdant valleys carved by the flow of ancient rivers, now coursing freely across the land. Towering mountains frame the horizon, their peaks still kissed by snow, but their lower slopes are covered in thick forests of trees, long, twisted, and gnarled, as though their roots remember the frost. Once barren and forbidding, these lands now teem with new growth, a patchwork of emerald greens and sapphire waters. But there is something else—beneath the beauty lies the pulse of magic, old and wild. The forests thrum with the remnants of an age when the boundaries between the natural and the supernatural were as thin as gossamer threads. Wanderers speak of paths that lead nowhere and everywhere, where the laws of reality bend.

In the middle of the continent, the thaw reveals something else entirely—a vast desert whose golden sands stretch out like a sea of time. Fierce and dry winds whip across the dunes, stirring up more than just dust. Here, remnants of once-great civilizations lie buried beneath layers of sand, their towering spires and vast cities reduced to ruins that shimmer like mirages in the heat. These are no ordinary relics; they are the bones of a civilization that, before the ice, was the world's envy. Now, they lie quiet, their grandeur forgotten, their secrets waiting to be unearthed by those brave or foolish enough to venture into the blistering heat. The sands whisper of lost deities, powers that defy understanding, and treasures that could rewrite the fate of kingdoms. But the desert holds dangers, too—storms of blinding sand, ancient guardians, and the ever-present mystery of the manifest zones.

Ah, the manifest zones—those wondrous, treacherous regions where the walls between Antæra and the elemental planes are worn thin. They are the true wild cards in this unfolding drama. In these places, reality twists like a leaf caught in a storm. What may seem like an ordinary glen or a calm lake can, with a single step, transform into an entirely different realm governed by the elements' raw, untamed power. Imagine walking through a tranquil forest, where the trees seem to breathe with an ancient rhythm, only to find yourself in the Feywild, where time warps and the trees rise like giants, their leaves shimmering with the light of distant stars. Or consider a tranquil lake that, under the right circumstances, becomes a portal to the Elemental Plane of Water, where the waters swirl into an abyssal trench so deep that even the deities themselves might hesitate to peer into its depths.

The thaw of Antæra is not just an awakening of land; it is a reawakening of kingdoms, of ambitions long stifled by the isolation of ice. Borders shift like the tides, and new alliances form as quickly as old ones crumble. The discovery of ancient ruins and manifest zones has set fire to rulers, scholars, and adventurers' imaginations. Each kingdom, from the isolated mountain clans to the sprawling coastal empires, sees in this new world the potential for dominance. Whoever controls the secrets of the ancient civilizations and the power within the manifest zones controls the future of Antæra. Yet, these ambitions are not driven solely by greed. Many believe that unlocking the mysteries of the past is the key to ensuring the world’s survival in this age of thaw and uncertainty. Others seek knowledge for its own sake, hoping to learn from the mistakes of their ancestors and prevent another age of ice from descending upon the world.

The air is thick with tales of discovery within the bustling cities, from the northern ports to the desert oases. In every tavern, by every hearth, stories of daring adventurers who ventured into the ruins and returned with artifacts of unimaginable power or those who disappeared into the manifest zones and returned changed—if they returned at all. These stories fuel a growing restlessness, a hunger for adventure that spreads across all levels of society. Even the common folk, once content to till their fields or craft their wares, find themselves dreaming of the wilds, of forgotten places where fortunes can be made or lost in the blink of an eye.

Antæra is a world teetering on the edge of something vast and unknown. The ruins and manifest zones are more than curiosities; they are doorways to power, knowledge, and destiny. Every kingdom, every adventurer, every scholar senses it: the world is changing, and with it, the future is up for grabs. Heroes will rise, not just because of their strength or cunning, but because they dare to step into the unknown, to forge their path in a world where the past and the future intertwine and where every decision could shape the fate of Antæra for centuries to come.

In the end, the Legends of Antæra are not just tales of lands thawed and kingdoms reborn—they are a saga of people, their dreams, their fears, and their relentless drive to carve out their place in this unfolding epic. This is a world where every path is fraught with danger, every ruin holds a secret, and every manifest zone beckons with the promise of power and the threat of madness. It is a world where the lines between history and myth blur, the echoes of the past shape the future, and every step into the wild is a step into legend.

Campaign: Scars Among the Stars

The Known Spheres are full of new frontiers to the avid Spelljammer: foreign lands, derelict crystal spheres, and enemies as old as time itself. Adventurers set out into wildspace to discover new lands and peoples, coming home with tales and riches. The Known Spheres are currently in an age of exploration and prosperity. This prolonged prosperity has caused a surge in the population count, and many of the spelljamming-aware spheres are experiencing an unprecedented amount of overpopulation. In an attempt to solve that problem, the government of the Gallamarketh sphere — which is also known to be the center of all inter-sphere politics and diplomacy — recently sent out a colony ship to discover and populate a derelict sphere and bring it into the fold of the Known Spheres. However, the ship and its crew met with an unfortunate fate after meeting Imperial spelljammers in transit, and crash-landed in an unknown derelict sphere. Their only directive is to survive and colonize. This sparked a multi-sphere holy war between the New Haven Imperium and the Known Spheres at large.

The Imperium — originally a runaway experiment by the old Netherese Empire — colonized a region on the prime world of the Antæran crystal sphere. It has been discovered that the Imperium has successfully colonized a crystal sphere outside of the Known Spheres. Rumors spread of tyranny and slavery on the worlds of this sphere, as reported by turncoats and interrogators of captured Imperial soldiers. This nation-turned-conqueror began its crusade after a divine mandate by its deity Ukrol, who preaches the superiority of humans above all others. Among the atrocities committed by these xenophobic slavers, they have broken the prohibition on gunpowder firearms and have begun ramping up their research on them.

Preoccupied by their endless politics and bureaucracies, the Gallamarketh government has begun hiring adventurers and mercenaries for many spheres' defenses against this rising threat. Because of this, the government of Gallamarketh has issued a decree that any new party of able-bodied individuals who sign on will receive a stipend and a lower-end spelljammer to begin their travels. Though some have metaphorically taken the money and run. This is where you, daring adventurers, come in. For one reason or another, you have answered the call to arms and joined up with a crew of seemingly like-minded individuals to meet this threat. Whether you use this opportunity to dole out justice or jumpstart your journey into the stars is up to you, but that choice is for you alone to make.

This wiki is designed to hold the lore for the homebrew setting of Antæra, and is not official Dungeons & Dragons content. As a note from the author, the setting is currently under revision to accommodate the inclusion of the Spelljammer setting.
