Origins
Long before his ascension, Vaeltharion was a Drow who served as the mortal avatar of the previous Herald of Dust. For centuries, he carried out his master’s will—presiding over the dead, safeguarding their remains, and ensuring they were laid to rest according to sacred custom. When his predecessor was finally claimed by the still winds of the Quasi-Elemental Plane of Dust, the mantle passed to him. In that moment, the wastes where the Negative Energy Plane meets the Elemental Plane of Earth reshaped him into more than mortal, binding him eternally to his charge. Though the Plane of Dust is his domain, Vaeltharion dwells upon the Ethereal Plane to walk the veil between worlds, guiding his clergy in the proper rites of burial, preservation, and reverence.
Description
Vaeltharion appears as a tall, cloaked figure whose form is shrouded in drifting motes, like dust suspended in still air. Faint traces of his drow heritage remain—long, slender fingers, the shadowed contours of sharp features, and eyes that gleam like pale coals in the dim. His lantern casts no heat, only the muted light of memory, and his hands bear the calm steadiness of a caretaker long accustomed to delicate work. When he walks the mortal world, it is to oversee burials, entomb the dead in stone, or seal them in dust, ensuring they remain undisturbed. His temples are the crypts and graveyards his clergy tend, each one a place of stillness and meticulous care. Though devoted to preservation and respect for the dead, his clergy are often viewed as sinister by the living, their constant proximity to death breeding superstition and fear among the uninformed. His sanctuaries along the Ethereal’s shifting currents are likewise filled with preserved bodies and monuments, kept in perfect stillness for eternity, and serve as halls of instruction for his priests.
Dogma
From dust we come, to dust we return. The body is the vessel of one’s journey, and even in death it demands respect. The Herald’s faithful guard the remains of the dead from desecration, entomb them with care, and conduct rites to preserve them against decay. The unburied are an affront, for they deny the return to dust through the dignity of ritual. Those who would defile a corpse or disturb a grave are to be punished without hesitation. The hooded lantern, his holy symbol, has also come to mark safe shelters and open hearths—a sign of hospitality for those who honor the resting places of the dead.
Home Sphere
Vaeltharion hails from the Lapis Sphere, a place where darkness is broken only by the slow pulse of psionic life. Born among the drifting mists of Umbravore, he once walked its hidden paths and hollow worlds as a mortal drow before his ascension. Though his influence now stretches far beyond its bounds and his duties keep him dwelling upon the Ethereal, the Lapis Sphere remains his place of origin—the soil and silence from which he first rose.
