Imperial Capital Of New Haven

Overview

The city of New Haven is the self proclaimed bastion of humanity’s imperial superiority. It is the capital city of the New Haven Imperium, ruled by the emperor Nicolaus Poplicola IX. The New Haven Imperium, or colloquially known as the Imperium, rules over a vast majority of the eastern side of the continent, and is of the belief that humanity is the apex of the mortal races and strives to share its beliefs and influence across the land.

The Imperium believes in ruling with an iron fist, and those who are too weak to lead in The Imperium are of better use serving it in more menial ways, such as in a trade or as a laborer. It is a heavily militaristic society and believes that the populace should receive a standard but equal share of wealth. However, those who contribute more to society get more back. Those who enlist in the legions receive more incentives than those who are conscripted, least of all are the enslaved. The Imperium does not discriminate in who it enslaves, as they are war prisoners all. However, human slaves are treated marginally better than non-human slaves in most cases.

If there is nothing positive to say of the Imperium, their military is considered one of the most skilled and brutal on the continent. Students from across the land attempt to attend the New Haven College of War, as it is considered the most advanced and prestigious military and martial school in the land. Most students who graduate here often either join the Imperium’s military or become adventurers. Those who join with a military scholarship join the Imperatoria Militaris after graduation, as the military pays for their entire education as long as the graduating student serves for at least 4 years.

The nobility of the Imperium consists mostly of the royal family, officers of the military, and wealthy imperial merchants. While most of the nobility have been so for generations, it is possible for citizens to become nobility through merit.

It is commonly believed in other parts of the continent that the Imperium are the remnants of an ancient Cult of Ukrol, given that most citizens in the Imperium still revere the Patron of Humanity. While there is no hard evidence to suggest this, it is rumored that the cult was resurrected with the rise of the Imperium at the start of the 5th Era. It was around this time that the Imperium adopted its imperial methods and started its expansion into other parts of the world.

Districts

Stone Hook

The best way to describe it is the slums and outcast quarter. Since the city itself is very pro-human, most other races are forced to live here in extremely unfavorable conditions. The few who are able to rise above and make it out rarely make it past Dragon Gate, and will never get past Dragon Gate if they are non-human or anything that remotely resembles one (such as elves or other similar humanoid races). The slave trade that is generally done here is usually done in secret, as it is not sanctioned by the city as humans are also sold here.

Dragon Gate

This is the section of the city that allows outsiders into the city to see the city, though they are closely watched by the city guard. Adventurers are viewed slightly better than their non-adventurous counterparts. Leaving this section of the city to view the rest, for a non-citizen, requires special permission or a voucher.

Asharch

The military district, located behind the palace. There is a military university situated here, and is the most prestigious military college in the entire empire. Humans are almost always admitted, whereas anyone else must usually have a recommendation or referral. The students and soldiers are the only residents that actually live here, and even then it’s in dorms or apartments. The majority of the city’s military and guard are garrisoned here, along with their families. The main temple located here is dedicated to Superbia.

Middlesect

This section of the city makes up most of the city, and is where the commoners live. The shops here are the same quality you would find anywhere else, however the only real difference is the overwhelming lack of any race other than humans. While they are not explicitly outlawed, it is relatively uncomfortable for a non-human to live here if they are not relatively well off. The non-humans living here are generally still humanoid in appearance, however the only jobs a visitor will likely see them in is a laborer or mercantile job. The only time someone will see a noble in this district is when they are purchasing slaves from the most esteemed and respected, if you can call it that, slave market in the continent. It prides itself on keeping slaves of all kinds in stock for any and all occasions. Though humans are never sold at this market, lest their license be revoked.

Gloomgarden

This quarter of the city is where the nobility resides, whether they are powerful mages, generals in the military, or the most influential of merchants. The only non-human residents of this quarter are the slaves of the human residents. Even then, they are required to wear magical disguises to appear human so as not to offend the human residents.

The Citadel

The seat of power in the entire Imperium, and the home of the Imperial family. It is also home to the religious center of the Imperium, which is believed to be dedicated to Superbia, though it is rumored to actually be dedicated to Ukrol. The only race allowed in are humans, as there is a powerful barrier erected around it that repels non-humans. Scholars believe that it is a powerful misuse of a Mythal, and is usually one of the subjects of many international disputes and disagreements. Though there is no substantial proof of this, anyone who accuses them of this is usually found to have suspiciously died of natural causes a few weeks later.
