The Umbræ Sphere
Overview
Umbræ is a sphere steeped in gloom, shadow, and the slow, inevitable decay of light. It orbits around Umbra’thuun, a dark star that emits no illumination, shrouding the entire sphere in perpetual twilight and drawing all life toward adaptation or extinction. The very atmosphere within the sphere feels thin and chill, not for lack of warmth, but from the slow spiritual erosion caused by the ever-present negative energy. The boundaries between planes are weak here, particularly with the Plane of Shadow and the Negative Energy Plane, allowing strange echoes of thought and being to drift between worlds.
Across Umbræ’s system, the planets range from tomb worlds and fungal hives to desolate wastes and wintry taigas, each shaped by a different flavor of darkness. Despite this, life persists—mutated, evolved, or necromantic—often clinging to ruins of civilizations long dead or thriving in biomes twisted into mockeries of more vibrant realms. The Shadow Plane’s reflection of Umbræ is densely populated by undead, while its Feywild echo serves as the dominion of the Unseelie Court. In the heart of that court lie the greatest of the sphere’s demigods, whose eerie and sometimes malign guidance seeps into mortal affairs in cryptic dreams and whispered oaths.
Floating along the outermost edge of the system is a jagged, glimmering belt of Negative Energy Crystals, believed to be solidified fragments of the sphere’s own ambient necrotic field. Scholars speculate that the density of manifest zones throughout Umbræ has allowed the energy to physically coalesce, forming Umbryceon—a terrifying boundary of crystallized death, beautiful in its menace. Through the starless skies and between the planets, a solitary obelisk of enchanted starmetal drifts soundlessly, etched with alien geometry and glowing ever so faintly with an inner, tan radiance. This artifact does not match the rest of the sphere and is indestructible by all known means. Its purpose remains unknown.
Throughout the wildspace of Umbræ, random manifest zones to the Negative Energy Plane appear without warning. These rifts resemble black holes from afar, pulling in matter and spelljammers alike. Those caught in their grasp are often torn from existence and deposited directly into the Negative Energy Plane—if they survive the journey at all. These unpredictable hazards have earned the sphere a grim reputation among navigators and adventurers, who consider it one of the most perilous destinations in the Known Spheres.
Planetology & Astrology
- Type of Sphere: Standard system

- Spelljamming Aware: No
Inner Track (<200 million miles)
-
Planet Name: Umbrafallax
- Distance: 41 million miles
- Size Category: D
- Planet Type: Earth
- Shape: Fragmented
- Other Notes: A shattered world whose magnetic field keeps floating continents of basalt and magnetite suspended in eerie proximity. The atmosphere still clings to these drifting landmasses, but it is fouled beyond repair—thick with metallic dust and choking mineral particulates that corrode lungs and blind sensors. Radiant fractures of Negative Energy Crystals sprout from the undersides and fissures of the stone, pulsing with cold black light and emitting waves of force that drain vitality and unravel the soul. Scholars speculate that Umbrafallax draws the majority of the sphere’s ambient negative energy like a magnet, reducing its intensity elsewhere from lethal to merely harmful. Its lone moon, Veilshard, phases in and out of the Plane of Shadow, scattering planar echoes throughout the field.
-
Planet Name: Mycendrum
- Distance: 92 million miles
- Size Category: E
- Planet Type: Liveworld
- Shape: Hollow
- Other Notes: The interior of this living planet is a vast fungal labyrinth, governed by a sentient hive mind at its core that communicates telepathically with the scattered myconid colonies. The myconids revere this intelligence as a divine entity, organizing their societies around its silent will. The crust is the hardened cap of the world-spanning fungus, deceptively solid and riddled with tunnels inhabited by burrowing vermin and aberrations. The surface supports a unique ecosystem of plant-based creatures and wandering undead that scour the land for sustenance. Thick spore clouds drift across the landscape, inducing hallucinations that range from minor disorientation to coma-inducing fugues. Scholars strongly advise against visiting the planet, warning that its spores can take root on other worlds and extend Mycendrum's influence far beyond its own surface.
-
Planet Name: Cinerhalus
- Distance: 147 million miles
- Size Category: D
- Planet Type: Earth
- Shape: Toroidal
- Other Notes: This toroidal world is pockmarked with constantly erupting volcanoes whose cores serve as manifest zones to the Elemental Plane of Magma. These vents spew ash and toxic gases into the upper atmosphere, forming vast spiraling cloud belts that enshroud the planet in choking storms. The lava that flows across its surface eventually cools into razor-sharp dunes of pure obsidian, their glassy grains scoured by wind and heat. The churning obsidian reflects light in strange, pulsing patterns, making the planet resemble a dark, beating heart when seen from orbit. Necromancers covet this sand for its purity and innate negative energy, valuing it at triple the worth of ordinary obsidian when used in rituals. The twin moons, Kelth and Morra, orbit in exact synchronicity and generate a dimensional anchoring field that prevents any planar travel out of the planet’s atmosphere. Planar entry is still possible, but once within the field, escape becomes significantly more difficult without direct intervention.
Goldilocks Zone (200–300 million miles)
-
Planet Name: Tenebralis
- Distance: 239 million miles
- Size Category: F
- Planet Type: Earth
- Shape: Spherical
- Other Notes: Tenebralis is a dark and ominous world, its surface shaped into distorted echoes of a temperate biosphere. Forests sprawl in overgrown tangles, their black-leaved canopies thick with thorn and gloom, inhabited by Unseelie fey and the beasts they command. The plains stretch wide and empty under the dim radiance of the dark sun, where unnatural silence reigns and travelers are watched by unseen things. Its oceans are vast and lightless, populated by creatures that have never seen the sun and hunt by sound, pressure, and psionic tremor. The primary inhabitants are dark elves and other nocturnal races who dwell openly on the surface, constructing cities that resemble twisted reflections of their cousins’ architecture on other worlds—ornate, towering, and veiled in shadow. In the Plane of Shadow's mirror of Umbrae, Tenebralis serves as the throne world of the Unseelie Court, recognized as its seat of power throughout the Known Spheres.
-
Planet Name: Ossirentia
- Distance: 271 million miles
- Size Category: G
- Planet Type: Earth
- Shape: Spherical
- Other Notes: Ossirentia is a desolate tomb world cloaked in pale white deserts, its surface bearing the unmistakable scars of a long-forgotten apocalyptic event. Towering plateaus of calcite rise from the dust like the ribs of a fallen titan, many cracked or blackened by ancient forces. Sparse cities, built by nocturnal and subterranean races, cling to the tops of these plateaus and serve as waystations and trade hubs for the world’s scattered nomadic peoples. Beneath the dunes, veined marble caverns echo with unnatural stillness and the faint hum of forgotten magics. The surface is haunted by humanoid undead—silent remnants of a lost civilization who drift across the wastes in endless, aimless pilgrimage. The three moons, Krall, Vess, and Orron, cast shifting shadows across the landscape, often overlapping in eerie and unpredictable patterns.
Outer Track (>300 million miles)
-
Planet Name: Frigflora
- Distance: 362 million miles
- Size Category: F
- Planet Type: Earth
- Shape: Spherical
- Other Notes: Frigflora is a world locked in eternal winter, with gray skies and soft, persistent snowfall blanketing every landscape. Vast glacial floes drift across the oceans, groaning as they grind and split upon frozen shores. The scattered continents are covered in frost-bitten taiga, where gnarled conifers and stunted brush provide cover for elemental predators and icebound beasts. The cold permeates even magic and metal, sapping warmth from travelers and silence from breath. Its three moons, Aelura, Thrym, and Vorn, are eerily synchronized in orbit with the planet, locking the day side in a permanent eclipse. As a result, the world is never truly lit, even when facing Umbra'thuun, bathed only in a dim, twilight hue.
-
Planet Name: Umbryceon
- Distance: 410 million miles
- Size Category: B
- Planet Type: Earth
- Shape: Belt
- Other Notes: A scattered field of floating crystals, Umbryceon is composed entirely of Negative Energy Crystals suspended near the edge of the planetary track like a fractured celestial boundary. These jagged, black-violet shards are believed to be the solidified remnants of latent negative energy that saturates the sphere. Scholars theorize that their formation results from the vast number of manifest zones leading to the Negative Energy Plane throughout Umbrae. Ships that pass too close have reported soul-sapping cold and flickering shadows moving independently of any source.
